A Sepang Attraction – Chop Guan Kee Coffee – 3rd generation Liberica bean users
Whilst at Outdoorgate we are focussed on our kayak tours we also like to highlight amazing business from our region and Chop Guan Kee is a Sepang attraction worth discussing.
It’s not often you come across a 3rd generation business where each generation aims to enhance the previous generation’s work. It all started with Jerrine’s grandfather, Teo Hoh Hwa, over 80 years ago when he started trading Liberica coffee beans grown in the region. Her father, Teo Choon Fung, took the business one step further and started to dry and roast the beans.
Roasting
Many roasters of coffee beans moved to gas to help keep up production and lower costs. However, Chop Guan Kee has not. By continuing to use charcoal and the old methods they have created a distinctive flavour to their coffee. The sweet and smooth texture of the coffee makes it a delight to drink. In 2017 his daughters, Jerrine and Shaohui, took over the business. But, how to take the family business further?
Food and beverage
Using their passion for food and beverages they developed a brand and a cafe in Sungai Pelek to sell the beans. The cafe now sells a fantastic range of meals with one of the best coffee beans you can try. Plus, to keep the children entertained you can even see the old hopper used.
